Xiaomi, well known for its mid-range smartphones, has recently released a new budget device in the low price range segment of the market, POCO M3. The POCO M3 looks really promising especially when we take a look at its price. Advertised at only 129 US dollars, the deal seems to be almost too good to be true. In this article, I will give you a detailed review of POCO M3. I will also explain whether you should buy this phone or not.
Price Of The POCO M3
As stated before, POCO M3 is a budget-focused device. When it was released, it was priced at only 129 US dollars for the base 4GB RAM and 64GB ROM variant for a very limited period of time. But now, if you want to buy the same model with the same specs, it will cost you around 165 US dollars.
There are actually 4 variants of POCO M3. 4/64 GB, 4/128GB, 6/64GB and the 6/128GB. For the international market, POCO released only the 4GB variants. The 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM variant costs about 175 US dollars.
But, you can find other 6GB variants of the POCO M3 in the Asian market. Especially in India. The price roughly converts to 165 US dollars for the 6GB RAM and 64GB ROM variant. And for the top-of-the-line 6GB RAM and 128GB ROM model, you can expect to pay about 185 US dollars.
What Comes With The Box?
We are currently living in a period when all the major mobile manufacturers are dropping many essential items from the retail box of their devices all in the name of environmental concerns. But not the POCO M3. It is great to see budget devices like the POCO M3 still including all the essentials you would ever need in the retail box.
In the box, you get a USB Type-C charging cable, a 22.5-watt fast charger, a plastic protective case, a screen protector, and a couple of bracelets. If you want to protect your M3 from major drops and accidents, it is not recommended to use the included protective case. For the best protection, use heavy and protective bumper cases.
Because of being a budget device, the POCO M3 is constructed entirely out of plastic. But the construction of the device does not feel terrible at all. The phone sits comfortably on the palm and is quite comfortable to use.
Unlike Samsung’s fake plastic glass approach on their budget devices, POCO did something really amazing with how this device feels in the hand by fully embracing the plastic construction.
The rear of this phone almost resembles the rear of the Oneplus 8t cyberpunk edition. The huge camera area of the phone gives it a signature look. There is a huge POCO branding on the back of the device.
On the top of the device, we hot a 3.5 mm headphone jack, a secondary microphone hole, and an IR blaster. The IR blaster will come in handy if you want to control any home appliances like TV or AC remotely.
On the bottom, there is a hole for the USB Type-C charging port and the bottom-firing speaker. There is also side-mounted a fingerprint scanner embedded in the power button of the device.

Despite being a very budget-friendly device, you get everything you need in terms of connectivity with the POCO M3. You get dual-band Wifi 5, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, and USB Type-C 2.0 with OTG on every model of the POCO M3.
POCO also sells a variant of M3 that supports NFC connectivity. You can also use two 4G sim cards on this device.
How Is The Display?
POCO M3 comes with a 1080 ✕ 2340 Pixels IPS LCD display. The 6.53-inch display has a pixel density of 395 PPI and can produce a maximum of 400 nits brightness. Considering the price, the display of the POCO M3 is really impressive. Although you can’t get a good experience while using the phone outdoor because of its comparatively dim display.
The phone is protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 3, which is enough to save this device from minor scuffs and scratches. But bear in mind, this device can easily get scratched by pocket sands if you live in a dusty environment. You can use the included screen protector for better protection against drops and scratches.
What About The Performance?
The POCO M3 is powered by the mid-range Snapdragon 662 processor. The octa-core processor paired with Adreno 610 GPU is enough to perform basic day-to-day tasks like browsing social media, watching youtube pretty smoothly. It scores above 180000 on the Antutu benchmark which is on par with the more expensive Samsung galaxy A60.
In terms of gaming performance, this device actually performs surprisingly well. Especially compared to its rivals in the same price range. You can play low graphics-intensive games without any noticeable lags or stutters. But do not expect to play more demanding games like PUBG mobile or COD mobile at high graphic settings smoothly.
The new POCO device packs some serious punch when it comes to the battery department. It has a huge 6000 mAh Li-po battery. The battery is non-removable. Fortunately, POCO M3 supports 18W fast charging which will come in handy while charging the massive 6000 mAh battery. It takes about 3 hours to fully charge this device with the included charger.
Needless to say, POCO M3 provides a really good battery backup. You can expect to get 8-9 hours of screen on time with this device. It can easily get you through more than a day of heavy use.
One of the fun features of the POCO M3 is its ability to perform reverse charging. You can use the M3 like a power bank and charge other devices off of its battery.
We get three cameras with the new POCO M3. A 48 MP, f/1.8 main camera, a 2 MP, f/2.4 macro camera, and a 2 MP, f/2.4 depth camera. The camera performance of the M3 is decent. It can take average pictures in well-lit conditions. It has a tendency to smoothen out images and omit sharpness while taking pictures in indoor conditions.
You can capture videos at 1080p resolution in 60 FPS with no stabilization. The front 8 MP, f/2.1 selfie camera can capture average selfies in daylight. But it really struggles while capturing images at night-time and in low light conditions.
How Is The UI?
POCO M3 runs on android 10 based MIUI 12. The UI is very responsive and rich with features. You can separate the notification shade into two individual panels in MIUI 12. One of the panel act as a notification panel where you can see all your recent notifications, and the other panel act as a control panel.
Overall, the UI is easy to use. There are no noticeable lags or stutters. But some of the customers of POCO M3 have complained that their device has a laggy UI. So keep that in mind while buying this device.
The POCO M3 is a really impressive value-for-money budget device. You get all the necessary functionalities that you would need from a smartphone at the fraction of the cost.
So should you buy it? I think if you are on a tight budget, or looking for a second device then you should definitely buy it. This device should be enough to provide you a good smartphone experience.
